Anuj Shah is Counsel in the Firm’s Hong Kong office, advising on complex cross-border financing transactions throughout the Asia-Pacific region. He represents a range of private equity sponsors, their portfolio companies, financial institutions, private credit funds and corporate borrowers, providing liquidity solutions at all levels of the capital structure. This includes a mix of acquisition and leveraged finance, fund finance, back-leverage and margin finance, infrastructure finance, real estate finance and other corporate finance transactions. Anuj’s pan-Asia Pacific experience covers jurisdictions including India, Greater China, Singapore, Vietnam, Korea, Japan and Australia.

Anuj has been named a 2024 “Rising Star” by the Fund Finance Association. Between 2021-2022, Anuj spent time on secondment with KKR in Hong Kong, supporting the capital markets and legal teams.

Anuj Shah is Counsel in the Firm’s Asia Banking and Credit Practice, based in Hong Kong. Anuj advises on complex cross-border financing transactions throughout the Asia-Pacific region. He represents a range of private equity sponsors, their portfolio companies, financial institutions, private credit funds and corporate borrowers, providing liquidity solutions at all levels of the capital structure. This includes a mix of acquisition and leveraged finance, fund finance, back-leverage and margin finance, infrastructure finance, real estate finance and other corporate finance transactions. Anuj’s pan-Asia Pacific experience covers jurisdictions including India, Greater China, Singapore, Vietnam, Korea, Japan and Australia. His clients span a wide range of industries including infrastructure, healthcare, financial institutions and consumer products.

Anuj has been named a 2024 “Rising Star” by the Fund Finance Association. He has also been a speaker at the Fund Finance Association’s 2023 APAC Symposium.

Between 2021-2022, Anuj spent time on secondment with KKR in Hong Kong, where he supported the capital markets and legal teams on a variety of financing transactions.

Among his representative matters, Anuj has advised:

  • KKR (and its portfolio companies) in connection with multiple financings and investments including its:
    • S$1.75 billion (US$1.3 billion) investment (in consortium with Singtel) in ST Telemedia Global Data Centres;
    • US$650 million investment in Vinhomes, the largest real estate developer in Vietnam;
    • US$530 million acquisition of a controlling stake in Ramky Enviro Engineers;
    • US$625 million acquisition of a controlling stake in Vini Cosmetics;
    • INR15.54 billion (US$204 million) acquisition of five Indian solar energy assets from SP Infrastructure;
    • NT$47.8 billion (US$1.56 billion) take-private of Taiwan’s LCY Chemical Corp., which was named a 2019 deal of the year by Asian-mena CounselFinance Asia and IFLR; and
    • Acquisition of Hyatt Regency Tokyo
  • ChemChina on a US$5.5 billion refinancing in connection with its take-private acquisition of Syngenta AG
  • SoftBank on its US$4.5 billion equivalent margin loan financing

Prior to joining Simpson Thacher in 2017, Anuj worked in the London and Hong Kong offices of a Magic Circle law firm. His work prior to joining Simpson Thacher includes advising:

  • Global Infrastructure Partners on its refinancing for the acquisition of Edinburgh Airport
  • The arrangers of the acquisition financing for AVR Afvalalverwerking B.V. (Dutch waste disposal business) by Cheung Kong Infrastructure (CKI)
  • The arrangers of the refinancing of Sanpower’s acquisition of House of Fraser (British department store chain)
  • Redview Capital and Asia-IO on the acquisition financing for optical communications technology provider Source Photonics
  • The arrangers of various art financings, with custody arrangements for high value art as collateral

Anuj is passionate about diversity initiatives and has served as a member of the Firm’s Diversity Advisory Council since 2018. He also co-chairs the Fund Finance Association’s Asia-Pacific Diversity Committee.

Anuj graduated from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London in 2009, where he received his LL.B. with first class honors. He is a dual-qualified solicitor in England and Wales and Hong Kong, commencing his career in London before relocating to Hong Kong in 2015.
