Formerly Vice President of the National Advertising Division of BBB National Programs, Laura Brett leads Simpson Thacher's Advertising Advisory and Litigation Practice. Drawing on a depth of industry leadership, Laura is a recognized authority in advertising law at the forefront of cutting-edge legal issues reshaping the field. She brings a sophisticated understanding of both the legal and business dimensions of advertising disputes, with a focus on the technological changes transforming how companies communicate with consumers. Her practice centers on advertising litigation and counseling, particularly the intersection of advertising law and the emerging legal challenges driven by technological innovation, including the use of artificial intelligence in advertising, data privacy, digital marketing practices, trademark, and other intellectual property matters. Laura routinely advises leading consumer-facing companies across the pharmaceutical, life sciences, consumer products, retail, and technology sectors, among others, helping clients navigate complex regulatory and competitive challenges as new technologies continue to redefine the advertising landscape.

Laura Brett is a Partner in the Litigation Department and leads the Firm’s Advertising Advisory and Litigation Practice. Drawing on a depth of industry leadership, Laura is a recognized authority in advertising law at the forefront of cutting-edge legal issues reshaping the field. She brings a sophisticated understanding of both the legal and business dimensions of advertising disputes, with a focus on the technological changes transforming how companies communicate with consumers. Her practice centers on advertising litigation and counseling, particularly the intersection of advertising law and the emerging legal challenges driven by technological innovation, including the use of artificial intelligence in advertising, data privacy, digital marketing practices, trademark, and other intellectual property matters. Laura routinely advises leading consumer-facing companies across the pharmaceutical, life sciences, consumer products, retail, and technology sectors, among others, helping clients navigate complex regulatory and competitive challenges as new technologies continue to redefine the advertising landscape.

Prior to joining Simpson Thacher, Laura was Vice President of the National Advertising Division (“NAD”) of BBB National Programs and served as the organization’s chief adjudicator. Laura oversaw disputes related to a wide range of consumer-facing product categories and engaged with key stakeholders at major multinational brands, law firms and federal and state regulators. She helped the NAD to develop policies and processes to uphold legal standards in an evolving digital economy and was at the forefront of policy discussions related to truth and transparency in advertising in the U.S. and globally, including in conversations with the Federal Trade Commission, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), International Council for Advertising Self-Regulation and European Advertising Standards Alliance.

In addition to overseeing the NAD’s team of lawyers and ensuring case decisions were consistent with legal and regulatory precedent, Laura is a demonstrated thought leader on law and policy issues in advertising. She also has extensive experience litigating on behalf of private clients.

Laura received her J.D. from Fordham University School of Law, and her B.A. in American Studies and English Writing from Trinity College – Hartford. She is admitted to practice in New York and Connecticut.
