At Simpson Thacher, we take an innovative, associate-centered approach to training and development. We offer a broad range of resources to support associates at every stage of their careers.
Each practice group has dedicated Professional Development Leads who regularly connect with associates to understand their goals, challenges and development requirements. Their insights help identify emerging needs and ensure associate feedback informs training priorities. Training Managers, Training Partners and the Legal Talent Development Committee use those inputs, and draw on needs analysis and other forms of feedback, to shape robust training curricula for each practice group and stage of associate development, including:
- Practice group and Firm-wide programs focused on substantive legal topics, practical skills and professional development.
- In-person transition programs at the first, third and fifth years – STBReady and STBAdvance – that support associates as they take on new responsibilities, build relationships across offices and practices, and develop skills needed at each state of their careers.
- Virtual learning series for fourth- and sixth-year associates focused on leadership and client skills.
- Internal and external coaching programs providing personalized, independent and confidential support as associates work toward professional objectives and navigate their careers.
- On-demand learning resources that support just-in-time skills development.
Our programs and resources are supplemented by what is perhaps the most meaningful component of associate development at Simpson Thacher: hands-on experience with partners and senior associates who take the time to discuss client matters, answer questions and support associates throughout their careers.
Associates at all levels are encouraged to participate in courses and workshops that help them build substantive expertise and broaden their professional skills.
Associates also have access to on-demand training and professional development resources, allowing them to revisit prior programs, learn in shorter formats and access practical guidance when needs arise.
